Ortitay, EQT, Local Leaders Help Restart Meals for Seniors
October 16, 2025
CANONSBURG – Rep. Jason Ortitay (R-Washington/Allegheny) today joined community leaders and representatives from EQT Corporation at the Canonsburg Senior Center to celebrate the return of the Meals to Go Program for local seniors.
The program, which provides meals for seniors in Canonsburg and the Cecil/McDonald area, was suspended earlier this year due to a loss of funding. Following outreach from concerned residents, Ortitay brought together key stakeholders to find a solution.
“Many seniors in our community rely on these meals for daily nutrition and independence,” Ortitay said. “When we learned the program was in jeopardy, we knew we had to act quickly and work together to make sure it did not disappear for good.”
Through collaboration with Southwestern Pennsylvania (SWPA) Area Agency on Aging (AAA) Executive Director Mary Harris, Washington County Director Mary Lynn Spilak, Canonsburg Mayor Dave Rhome and Ortitay, the group determined $10,000 in seed money was needed to restart the program.
SWPA AAA secured a $4,000 commitment from a local donor but still needed $6,000 to fully relaunch the program. Ortitay contacted EQT Corporation, which agreed to provide the remaining $6,000.
“Thanks to EQT's support and the strong partnerships we have in this community, we were able to bring this service back to the seniors who depend on it,” said Ortitay.
At the event, EQT presented a check to SWPA AAA, officially marking the program’s relaunch. Meals have already resumed for seniors across the region.
Ortitay praised the collaboration among local leaders and the generosity of EQT, noting that without these combined efforts, the program would not have been possible.
