Allegheny County Property Tax Proposal Unaffordable, Ortitay Says
10/9/2024
HARRISBURG — Rep. Jason Ortitay (R-Washington/Allegheny) issued the following statement in response to Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato’s proposal to substantially hike property taxes:

“In a time when inflation has spiraled out of control, people are fighting to keep their heads above water. The cost of basic goods, such as groceries, gas and other daily necessities, have surged, leaving many households scrambling to make ends meet.

“Rather than stepping in to relieve the pressure, the county executive of Allegheny County has proposed a more than 46% property tax increase. The justification – filling a budget deficit and paying for increased government spending. It is essentially saying that government spending is more important than your necessities to survive.

“Seniors on fixed incomes have seen their retirement savings eroded by inflation, and this tax increase could push them past the point of no return. Homeownership is going to be further out of reach, especially for those trying to buy their first home. Renters also could see a sharp increase in rent as landlords see their property taxes skyrocket and pass the increases on to their tenants if this proposal goes into effect.

“The 46th Legislative District contains part of the southern tip of Allegheny County – South Fayette Township and the boroughs of McDonald and Oakdale. As budget hearings begin on this proposal, these residents should voice their concerns and ensure their voices are heard.”

The 46th Legislative District includes South Fayette Township and McDonald and Oakdale boroughs in Allegheny County. It also encompasses Cecil, Chartiers, Mt. Pleasant and North Strabane (Districts 6,7,8 and 9) townships and Canonsburg, Houston and McDonald boroughs in Washington County.
